Was genuinely surprised. The food was far better than I thought it would be, and the atmosphere of the place was nothing short than amazing. I had the lentil soup and the sirloin steak salad. Both were a real treat.

Best pub in Saffron Walden. We have recently moved here and have found the OEG to be an extremely welcoming and friendly pub. The bonus is the great food.....throughly recommend the fish sharing platter!! A village pub atmosphere in the middle of town. Thoroughly recommended!

Visited at lunchtime. Bar staff were really lovely and welcoming. I had the vegan aromatic garden burger which was good. My friend had sausage and mash which was apparently very tasty. Was very impressed that they had a whole page vegan menu. The beer was well kept and if we were in Saffron Walden would definitely call in again.

What can I say? This slightly hidden secret is fantastic. The food doesn't even need too much discussion, always tasty, enough and good value. We have mostly had roasts (we keep coming back!) and it's always been great. Today, though, I want to focus on the amazing, caring service. It being mother's day (and me being less than organised for once! ), I contacted them by email the night before. I then phoned in the morning. They were fully booked but kindly suggested we could try calling a bit later to see. In the meantime, I got a similar lovely reply to my email. They confirmed a reservation, and then patiently and kindly answered my calls a couple of times and held it as we were delayed. That's before we even got to the service itself. So thoughtful, attentive, patient, kind, I could go on. Everyone at OEG is lovely and we will keep coming back (this is already the fourth or fifth time after discovering it). Bravo OEG team

I've been here 2-3 times in the last 5 years and eaten lunch here. The food is very good. They do table service, but manage to remain a proper pub rather than going "way gastro". A good beer selection, including Wadsworth's 6X, which it's unusual to find in this part of the country.
